The number of leptospirosis (Lepto) cases has risen dramatically in recent years in both suburban and rural dogs. Leptospirosis is a potentially life-threatening disease and now is the number one infectious cause of acute renal failure in dogs. It is also transmissable to humans.
We had previously recommended vaccinating only hunting dogs or dogs that did extensive hiking. But due to several local non-hunting/hiking dogs contracting leptospirosis, we now recommend all dogs be protected against leptospirosis. We also would like you to be aware that local kennels are now requiring leptospirosis before they will allow a dog to board.
Most Lepto cases are caused by emerging subtypes: Grippotyphosa and Pomona. Traditional Lepto vaccines do not protect against these newer subtypes. Fortunately a new vaccine has been introduced that will aid in the protection of these emerging serovars. We are now recommending and using this vaccine at our hospital to protect at-risk canine patients from this disease, ie: those exposed to contaminated water, where wildlife is present and dogs due to be boarded.
The vaccine is given in a two . dose series. Your dog will receive the intial dose of vaccine followed by a booster given two to three weeks later. After the initial series the vaccine will be given annually, usually at the time of the annual physical exam.
Thank you for taking the time to review this important information about canine health. Please call to schedule an appointment for your dog's Lepto immunizations as soon as possible.
